Every month, my roommate and I mix cocktails and watch a few episodes of The Golden Girls. It’s a chance to unwind, catch up, and build skills as amateur bartenders. Follow this ongoing series of drinks to suit your tastes! Read part one, grapefruit cucumber cocktail, here

Our next cocktail was inspired by a love for the gruesome gastronome, Hannibal: basil-infused blood orange cocktails, via What’s Gaby Cooking. Of course, the blood orange also makes it perfect for Halloween spooks and spoils. Basil complements the citrus, for a not-too-sweet concoction. This one involves making a simple syrup. I know that sounds like so much work, but trust me: it’s worth it, and far easier than it sounds.

  • 4 oz. premium vodka
  • 1/2 oz. triple sec
  • 1 oz. basil simple syrup*
  • 8 oz. blood orange juice
  • 1 cup ice

*Combine equal parts water and sugar (1 cup each) in a pot, with 10 basil leaves. Bring to a boil, stirring. The sugar should dissolve. Remove from the stove, and allow the syrup to cool as the basil infuses (roughly two hours).

Combine the vodka, triple sec, basil simple syrup, blood orange juice, and ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake until mixed and chilled. Strain and serve in cocktail glasses. Add a garnish of blood orange slice and basil.
